Parables of Jesus

June 26, 2016 by Tim

During His earthly ministry Jesus taught using over forty parables. These are therefore a significant part of the teachings recorded in the gospels and it is helpful for us to study them in detail.

As called upon to preach, Tim Dean, one of our Deacons, will be helping us to study the parables of Jesus in a series following a basically chronological order that the parables were taught. This is an occasional series and sermons will be added below as preached.

Additional information is also being compiled to help the congregation in the study of parables. This is available here.

In the Footsteps of Jesus – The Gospel of Mark

April 2, 2016 by Tim

Our series of Bible Talks @Kallangur from April to August 2016 was “In the Footsteps of Jesus”. The series drew from Helen Tenney’s Mark’s Sketchbook of Christ by Banner of Truth as the base for the talk topics. As Tenney notes:

Just as the lightning chalk artist draws in quick bold lines, so the author of the gospel of Mark sketches the life of Jesus Christ. The artist may use varied colours of chalk, short and long strokes, fine and broad lines, often concealing the design almost until the drawing is complete. When the last touch has been added and the special lights have been turned on, the picture emerges in breathtaking beauty. The gospel of Mark is a series of scenes from the life of Christ and tells more of what he did than what he taught. The scenes are sketched rapidly one after another, presenting him as the great miracle-worker as well as the great teacher. Anyone enlightened by the Holy Spirit who reads this account of Jesus‚ life and deeds will be driven to the conclusion of the Roman centurion at the cross; ‘Truly this man was the Son of God’ (Mark 15:39).

Our talk topics included:

  1. Beginnings (Mark 1:1-45)
  2. Questions and Answers (Mark 2:1-3:6)
  3. Friends and Foes (Mark 3:7-35)
  4. Parables (Mark 4:1-34)
  5. Miracles (Mark 4:35-5:43)
  6. Opinions – pro and con (Mark 6:1-56)
  7. Opposition – traditions (Mark 7:1-37)
  8. Peter’s Confession (Mark 8:1-38)
  9. Transfiguration (Mark 9:1-50)
  10. Interviews (Mark 10:1-52)
  11. Authority (Mark 11:1-12:12)
  12. A Day of Questions (Mark 12:13-44)
  13. The Future (Mark 13:1-37)
  14. Facing Death (Mark 14:1-72)
  15. Crucifixion (Mark 15:1-47)
  16. Resurrection (Mark 16:1-20)

Sermons for the series are available below.

Lost!

February 28, 2016 by Tim

In Luke 15 Jesus told three parables about ‘lost and found’. These parables were a message of hope preached to the ‘tax collectors and sinners’ gathered around Jesus, and a message of conviction to the ‘Pharisees and scribes’ who challenged Jesus about associating with these people.

A recent sermon looked into these lessons particularly from the third parable, drawing on lessons for us today of:

  1. The lost son who left home
  2. The prodigal father
  3. The lost son who stayed home
  4. Loving the lost
